Progress in schools construction

GOVERNMENT has completed construction of 15 of the targeted 17 modern schools in rural provinces and wants to complete 45 more similar learning institutions next year.
The 17 schools are being constructed under a US$20 million grant secured by Government from the OPEC Fund International for Development (OFID) in 2015. Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Deputy Minister, Edgar Moyo, said fifteen of the 17 schools were complete and are now awaiting some fittings and furniture. The other two, he said, are 90 percent complete and now need plastering and flooring.

Two hundred units of the proposed 300 Primary Mobile Science Laboratory units are now in place. Tendering for Science kits for 3 000 primary schools is underway.

1. Construction of Mariga Primary School is 15 percent complete and the rest at 50 percent
2. Construction of additional learning facilities in schools (Community IRA-supported Infrastructure Development):- Two classroom blocks at St Josephs Primary School are at 99 percent completion, while the two classroom blocks under construction at Beitbridge Government Primary School are 90 percent complete.

The project was commissioned by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, whereby 400 iPads were delivered by 20 primary schools. Forty one of the 60 assistive devices for 60 learners who are hard of hearing were fitted.

The Minister for Higher and Tertiary Education, Professor Amon Murwira said the government intends to build state of the art laboratories in rural schools so as to support Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the areas.

Government has started constructing 17 modern schools in rural areas courtesy of the $20 million provided by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
The programme is set to reduce the deficit of schools in the country, which currently stands at 2 000. Some of the 17 schools are now above slab level while others are at window level with construction expected to be complete on or before October 21.
