Zim banks line up climate finance

Zimbabwean banks have lined up funding for climate projects in a big way. Much of the money is earmarked for projects that curb carbon emissions through renewable energy use in homes, universities, farming and businesses. A total of $220 million has been mobilised – or is at the point of being raised — by the Infrastructure Development Bank of Zimbabwe (IDBZ) and Steward Bank for this purpose and more.

The Infrastructural Development Bank of Zimbabwe is making a fundamental move of expanding its investments towards climate change projects, an official said. The facility, already approved by the board will initially focus on energy, water and agriculture sectors as well as projects that will come under Low Emission Development Strategy.

GOVERNMENT has come up with a major strategy to minimise the effects of erratic rains expected in the 2018/19 agricultural season, Lands, Agriculture and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri said yesterday. The grand plan, he said, includes expediting installation of irrigation infrastructure as well as getting farmers to broaden their range of crops to include small grains in all farming sub-sectors and regions.
