Mining sector capacity utilisation up

Zimbabwe’s mining sector has registered a 75 percent capacity utilisation rate this year compared to 71 percent in 2017 despite operational challenges threatening growth in the long term. Employment levels in the formal mining industry are now averaging more than 35 000 compared to 30 000 last year. Export receipts for the period January to October at US$3.2 billion

The JOBS of more than 2,000 RioZim employees were left hanging in the balance Wednesday after gold producer suspended operations at three of its mines. The company blamed foreign currency shortages for the development and has since indicated it is considering legal action against the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ).

Govt engages Metallon

GOVERNMENT is engaging the country’s largest gold producer Metallon Corporation with a view to finding a lasting solution to the miner’s problems which has seen it placing hundreds of workers on retrenchment notice. The engagements, according to Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, are also important in light of Government’s quest to grow the country’s gold production from just over 24, 8 tonnes in 2017 to 100 tonnes annually.
